Northern Machining offers
superfinishing as a service at our shop in
Norfolk, NY. Superfinishing is a metalworking process that improves
surface finish and work piece geometry of a particular part. At
Northern Machining, Inc., we can achieve this by removing just the thin surface layer left by the last process with an abrasive stone; this layer is usually about 1 μm in magnitude. Superfinishing, unlike polishing which produces a mirror finish, creates a cross-hatch pattern on the work piece. An abrasive is rotated in one direction while the work piece rotated in another, creating a cross-hatch pattern.
Superfinishing is also known as micromachining, microfinishing, and short-stroke honing.
