Northern Machining offers super finishing as a service. Super finishing is a metalworking process that improves surface finish and work piece geometry of a particular part. This is achieved by removing just the thin surface layer left by the last process with an abrasive stone; this layer is usually about 1 μm in magnitude. Super finishing, unlike polishing which produces a mirror finish, creates a cross-hatch pattern on the work piece. An abrasive is rotated in one direction while the work piece rotated in another, creating a cross-hatch pattern
Superfinishing is also known as micromachining, microfinishing, and short-stroke honing.
ADVANTAGES OF SUPER FINISHING:
- Increasing part life
- Decreasing the wear on the part over time
- Closer tolerances
- Higher load bearing surfaces
- Better sealing capabilities
